KoolR Magnum Replacement: the Wine-R WR2500 Guide

The Wine-R WR2500 is a KoolR Magnum replacement that is compatible with the standard KoolR Magnum wall opening, so in standard installations the existing opening, framing, and outlet carry over with no cutting or framing changes. It uses the same through-the-wall format, runs on a dedicated 115V/60Hz/15A circuit, and needs a condensate drain line. Three things to confirm before you order:

• The opening and the wall. WR2500 cutout: 15 5/8 in x 9 1/4 in, interior wall 5.5 to 14 in thick. Send yours through the Compatibility check.
• A condensate drain line. Required, in a continuous downhill slope to a drain or condensate pump. If your Magnum had none, plan one first.
• A dedicated circuit. 115V/60Hz/15A, no shared loads, extension cords, or switch-controlled outlets. This is a warranty condition.

KoolR Magnum replacement: what fits and what carries over

The standard KoolR Magnum wall cutout is listed at 15 3/4 inches wide by 9 3/4 inches high, in walls up to 7 inches thick. The WR2500 is specified for a 15 5/8 by 9 1/4 inch cutout in walls 5.5 to 14 inches thick, and it fits the standard KoolR Magnum opening in standard installations. It matches the through-the-wall format and runs on a dedicated 115V/15A residential circuit. In standard KoolR Magnum installations, no cutting, framing, or electrical work is typically required. Site-specific factors, such as a wall thinner than 5.5 inches or an opening that has been modified over the years, may require adjustment and are confirmed during pre-validation.

The wall opening, framing, and outlet from your original KoolR install carry over to the WR2500. The most expensive part of the original installation stays paid for.

The WR2500 covers cellars up to 700 cubic feet with glass walls and up to 900 cubic feet in fully enclosed cellars. With R-20 minimum insulation, a typical Magnum installation fits within range. Condensate drain line: what you need to add

The WR2500 produces condensation during normal cooling cycles. The condensate drain is an installation requirement: a 3/8 in ID line on a continuous downward slope, with a pump where the run exceeds about 5 ft or has to rise. Plan the route at the same time as the opening.

What the drain needs:

• Hose: 3/8 inch inside diameter (some earlier units use 1/4 inch; check your label). The drain elbow, hose, and clamp are in the box.
• Slope: a continuous downhill run with no sags or traps, to a waste line, condensate pan, or floor drain. Gravity drainage is preferred.
• Pump or pro: where the drain cannot slope continuously, use a condensate pump (not included). Runs beyond about 5 feet, or any run that rises, are a job for a plumber or installer.

If your KoolR Magnum installation included a drain line, verify it remains accessible, sloped correctly, and clear before installing the WR2500. If your KoolR Magnum did not include a drain line, plan and install one before commissioning the unit.

KoolR Plus, KoolR Nuvo and other KoolR models

The WR2500 is matched to the standard KoolR Magnum opening. For a KoolR Plus, a KoolR Nuvo, or another KoolR wine cellar cooling unit, the answer depends on the opening, not the model name, so the WR2500 is not assumed to fit until the opening is measured and checked.

How to use the table:

• Your unit sits in a through-the-wall opening, or you are not sure which model you have. When a through-the-wall cooling unit stops performing, owners generally weigh a repair against a replacement. Both can be reasonable. The right answer depends on the unit's age, its warranty status, and a repair quote from a qualified technician. The information below is general guidance, not a diagnosis of any specific unit.

Symptoms worth investigating

A cellar that drifts warm, constant running without holding temperature, short cycling, ice on the coil, or increased noise are all worth investigating. Causes range from room conditions and airflow to component wear; a qualified technician can confirm which applies to your unit.

Weighing a repair

A repair addresses one component at a time. For units well out of warranty, some owners compare the repair quote against the cost of a new, warrantied unit. Repair can be the right choice, particularly for a recent unit or a minor fix. A written quote is the best basis for the comparison.

If you consider the WR2500

The WR2500 is compatible with the standard KoolR Magnum wall opening, so in many cases the existing opening can be reused. Compatibility of the opening is one part of the decision: cooling capacity must be validated against your cellar's size and construction, and the WR2500 requires a condensate drain line. Before you order: three measurements and three photos

Measure the existing wall opening at three points: width, height, and wall thickness. Take photos of three views: the cellar-side face, the warm-vent side, and the electrical outlet. The WR2500 fits the standard KoolR Magnum opening, but every install has site-specific factors (drywall depth, framing variations, conduit position) worth verifying once before committing.

What stays the same

The wall opening from your KoolR Magnum works for the WR2500 in standard installations. The framing around the opening, the drywall finish, and the trim do not need to change.

Electrical typically does not change. The WR2500 runs on a dedicated 115V/60Hz/15A circuit. A dedicated circuit is required: shared loads, extension cords, and switch-controlled outlets void warranty coverage. If your existing outlet shares a circuit with other loads, have an electrician add a dedicated circuit before installation.

The warm-side venting requirement stays. Through-the-wall units exhaust heat into the space on the warm side of the wall, which needs to be an interior room with open airflow, such as a utility room, a finished basement, or a ventilated mechanical room. The WR2500 has the same warm-side requirement.

What changes

The fascia design is different. The WR2500 front face does not match the KoolR Magnum. If you built custom trim or a surround around the KoolR fascia, that trim probably will not align with the WR2500. Most installations are straightforward to retrim, or to leave with the manufacturer fascia.

The warranty and support relationship is different. The WR2500 ships with a 2-year limited parts warranty supported directly by the Wine-R North American service team. There is no dealer in between. Glass exposure: glass adds heat load faster than an insulated wall, even double-pane sealed glass. A cellar with glass walls or a large glass door requires more capacity.
